The number of university-launched startups based on the innovative research surpassed 3,000 nationwide for the first time in FY2021 to 3,306 according to a survey by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI). By university, the University of Tokyo is the highest in number, followed by Kyoto University and Osaka University.
Startups from the University of Tokyo top the list with 329 companies. This is followed by Kyoto University with 242 companies, Osaka University with 180 companies, Tsukuba University with 178 companies and Keio University with 175 companies. Keio University has almost doubled its number of companies from 90 as of FY2020, and has quickly risen from 10th to 5th in the rankings.
